Victorian population gambling and health study 2023 report
The Victorian gambling and health study 2023 is a large general population survey on gambling participation, gambling problems and gambling-related harm in the state of Victoria, Australia. The research was conducted between January and May 2023.
The study is the fourth in a series, with previous studies conducted in 2018-19, 2014 and 2008. The key changes to methodology from the prior studies include:
- mobile-only survey administered through the Integrated Public Network Database (IPND),
- detailed expenditure questions for each gambling activity,
- detailed questions about ’affected others’, and
- more sociodemographic questions.
The study involved a survey of 11,000 randomly selected Victorian adults.

It describes the tasks undertaken by The Social Research Centre on behalf of The Centre for Gambling Research at the Australian National University including:
- questionnaire design,
- sample frame, including information regarding the Integrated Public Number Database,
- data collection,
- pilot testing,
- fieldwork and
- data preparation (including cleaning and weighting).
Potential improvements relating to the questionnaire and methodology for future surveys are also included.
