Specific matters considered
Representatives from Youth Justice attended the working group meeting to discuss a draft project proposal to develop a Youth Justice LGBTIQ strategy, and seek feedback from Working Group members on the draft proposal. The strategy will provide policy and operational guidance for how Youth Justice will respond to and support the needs of young people in the youth justice system who identify as LGBTIQ.
Representatives from the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) also attended the Working Group meeting to provide an update on the Review of Assisted Reproductive Treatment (ART) in Victoria. The review being undertaken by Mr Michael Gorton AM, focuses on the Victorian regulatory framework for ART. More information about the Review is available on the health.vic website (External link). Working group members provided feedback on experiences of accessing ART by members of the LGBTIQ community, including barriers encountered when attempting to access such services.
A representative from Justice Health attended to seek members’ comments on its Health care policy for prisoners who are trans, gender diverse, or intersex. Feedback was sought from members as part of Justice Health’s review of the policy published in April 2017.
Working Group members considered a preliminary scoping document on information relating to LGBTIQ rights that is available to community members. Working Group members noted some of the gaps in the information that is currently available and discussed possible opportunities to consolidate and update this information.
The Human Rights Law Centre’s Report, End the Hate: Responding to prejudice motivated speech and violence against the LGBTI community was tabled at the meeting and the Report’s recommendations endorsed by the Working Group. The Report is available at www.hrlc.org.au (External link).
