The Department of Justice and Community Safety works closely with Victoria Police, the Transport Accident Commission, the Department of Transport and the Department of Health to improve road safety as part of a long-term strategy to reduce the number of people killed and injured on Victoria’s roads.
Together, these road safety partners implement an integrated, multi-faceted approach to road safety, which combines targeting high-risk behaviour, road-safety law enforcement, education and public awareness initiatives, research and development, and improvements to Victoria's road network.
The department oversees a range of enforcement measures under the Victorian Government’s Road Safety Strategy 2021-2030, many of which are coordinated by the state’s road safety camera program.
Victoria has been a world leader in the use and development of road safety technology, helping to change driver behaviour and keep people safe on our roads.
Victoria’s road safety program helps to save lives, prevents road trauma and plays a critical role in reducing the number of motorists doing the wrong thing on our roads.
Road safety cameras are proven to be one of the most effective ways to save lives and get motorists to slow down. There is on average a 47 per cent reduction in crashes resulting in death or injury on the road at intersections where a camera is installed.
We also know that cameras have a significant deterrent effect too, with a 26 per cent reduction in all crashes resulting in death or injury at intersections where a fixed camera is installed but not monitoring that direction of traffic.
Victoria’s fixed freeway cameras reduce road casualties by some 30 per cent on the freeways where they are installed.
The mobile speed camera program achieves general deterrence against speeding across the entire road network with its “anywhere, anytime” operational approach.
