On 20 April 2020, the LGBTIQ Justice Working Group held its second meeting. This meeting was an additional meeting scheduled to discuss the impacts of coronavirus (COVID-19) on LGBTIQ communities and was held online.

Impacts of COVID-19 on LGBTIQ communities
Members discussed the impacts of coronavirus (COVID-19) on LGBTIQ communities. Members noted their concern for the escalation in family violence being experienced among LGBTIQ communities. The loss of safe spaces and community connection due to the impacts of coronavirus (COVID-19) were noted, especially for young people who may unsafe in isolation at home with families who are unsupportive.
Members also discussed the difficulties that transgender prisoners are experiencing in accessing hormone replacement therapy while in custody. Members noted that the impact of not being able to access hormone replacement therapy on transgender prisoners’ mental health is being compounded by the impacts of coronavirus (COVID-19) such as the suspension of face-to-face visits from family and friends.
Recent IBAC findings into the conduct of Victoria Police officers at the Hares & Hyenas bookstore
The Working Group expressed deep concern with the outcomes of the IBAC inquiry into conduct of Victoria Police officers at the Hares & Hyenas bookstore and noted the impact of this incident on the trust and relationship between LGBTIQ communities and police.
Areas of focus
Members noted the need to revisit the group’s priorities for 2020, and reiterated their commitment to focussing on LGBTIQ people in custody and legislative reform to prevent and respond to discrimination experienced by LGBTIQ people.
