Following its recent establishment by the Victorian Government’s Taskforce for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) Victorians, the LGBTI Justice Working Group 2015-17 held its second meeting on 7 December 2015.
The Justice Working Group is co-chaired by Anna Brown and Harriet Shing MP.
Co-chair Anna Brown was joined by the Commissioner for Gender and Sexuality, Rowena Allen, as well as Brenda Appleton and Jamie Gardiner from the Taskforce.
Specific topics considered
The Justice Working Group considered and discussed a draft work plan for 2016 -17. Key areas of focus for the Working Group under the draft work plan include advising the Government on:
- reforms to the Relationships Act 2008 to strengthen legal recognition of same sex relationships;
- reforms to the Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Act 1996 as it relates to trans and gender diverse and intersex Victorians; and
- a review of all Victorian legislation to identify provisions that unfairly discriminate against LGBTI Victorians and any consequent legislation.
Under the draft work plan, the Justice Working Group will also monitor the operation of the expungement scheme for historical homosexual sex convictions and take steps to promote the scheme.
The draft work plan was provided to the Taskforce for consideration at its next meeting on 17 December 2015.
Next Meeting
The Justice Working Group will reconvene for its next meeting on 15 February 2016.
