The facility provides a number of programs and operates several industries for prisoners to work and gain skills in, including agriculture, horticulture, woodwork, cleaning services, kitchen and general maintenance. An angus cattle stud is also operated on-site.

“It really doesn't matter what kind of industry or occupation you previously had, but an ability to be able to work with people, to work as a team and to understand individuals I think is really important.”

“Langi Kal Kal is what we call an open camp, so it's minimum security prisoners. So it's about actually working out what needs they have before they transition into the community post sentence.”

“So the role of a prison officer is kind of multifaceted, it’s quite varied. So there's the technical aspects of the job such as security checks. There's a lot that we do around case management.”

“Case management is when you sit down with a prisoner, you set up goals between you and the prisoner that the prisoner will work towards.”

You're interacting with them, you're building these professional relationships and you're supporting them through their sentence and trying to prepare them for release.”

“We encourage them to take upon any educational courses that might be available.”

“And they’ll get qualifications and they’ll get work skills that will give them real work opportunities outside.”

“They've got many industries along with the farm. They've got 1,200 chooks, they're running an egg farm, got a working metal fabrication industry. They got textiles, they're producing clothing for other prisoners.”

“To be a prison officer, I think it's good if you are a good listener.”

"So you have to have understanding. You have to be able to communicate with them, to keep calm and to be able to talk to them.”
